West Village Double Townhouse

Searching for a home to accommodate their growing family and stellar contemporary art collection, our clients came across a pair of West Village Federal-style townhouses that could be converted into a single-family home. The architect soon realized he could exploit the structure’s 36-foot width to create an air of openness rare in townhouse design.

The couple’s goal was casual family living that would meld their art collection with the creative energy of a lively young family. Their program included separate Bedrooms for the 4 children, a Basement Playroom, and large uninterrupted walls for hanging art. By moving the Living Room to the back to face the rear Courtyard, we were able to insert two large walkable skylights and a wood-burning fireplace. The courtyard is a study in Zen simplicity that belies its intricate scaling and perfectly fitted organic material. German oak, stone, and metal details give the home a warmth and variety of hues that settle comfortably in each room. The Kitchen is outfitted with clean marble countertops and a highly polished floor that reflects light from the courtyard.

The resulting home is a standout space for art that exudes all the warmth of a young family’s energy.
